What precisely is your point? That because things are so bad in emerging and developing nations we shouldn't ask for better from Metro? OP, read Un-Suck Metro. There are enough frightening stories - and, worse, a total lack of appropriate response or change from Metro - that you'll start to see more problems. |

I agree that NYC's system is much worse, and even the Tube in London is no great shakes anymore.
It's ridiculous to complain about service at the same time you're slamming unions and high metro fares. Sure, maybe some part of the problem is bad management. But a whole lot more is bad training of metro employees and another biggie: lack of investment in infrastructure. The system is 30 years old now and a lot of maintenance is overdue. Guess what, geniuses: better training, better trained metro personnel, and infrastructure investment all mean more money! |
| I think OP should travel more and see how amazing the metro is in several European countries |
| I wondered how long before the local brought up NY or the Northeast. No comparison. Let it go. |
| If people do not like it, then do not take the metro. Problem solved. |
Because there is one and only one DC Metro and comparison is impossible? |
This. Stop whining, everybody. Sometimes I wonder about people who think the world has to be perfect, even when someone else is paying for it. Every aspect of their lives has to meet their 100% of their needs in every instant. If this is you, then Metro is never going to make you happy and you're better off driving into DC. |

...then you've never been to Boston, NYC, and especially Tokyo.
My biggest beef is the cost for virtually no service at night, not enough service during rush hour, etc. |
The unions and especially pensions ARE the problems. Drain money from the system and ask more from the riders. Still can't afford to pay for basic repairs. |
Here's the thing: are you willing to pay higher fares/taxes for better service? Otherwise, this is like the people who complain about public schools and, in the same breath, argue we need to lower taxes. Sure, clean out Metro management. But at some point that's not enough. You need to hire higher-skilled, better-educated workers, which means higher salaries. And you need to do all that track maintenance that's been deferred for years, yes, for years. |
Thanks, now I have to wipe the spittle off my nice new MacBook Air. |
+1 the biggest expenditures are union labor demanded pensions and benefits |
Damn those Metro workers, they got health and pension benefits!!! Don't they know their place is at the bottom of the economic heap?! Now (wrings hands and snickers), if we only get the Supreme Court to roll back Obamacare, that'll really show those Metro workers! |
Why shouldn't lazy slackers with attitude and a false sense of entitlement be at the bottom of the economic heap? Why should they have all the great benefits with little comparable education? |
