I second Kohls for inexpensive workout gear. And Target. I'm in the same boat and sending you good thoughts! |
Target. Gap. Athleta. I am 40 lbs overweight. Do not care what others think. You must start someplace, right?! |
I just bought a pair of great capris from JCP. It's their new brand - Made for Life. They've been comfy so far.
Good luck to you OP!! |
I also love JCP workout gear, the Xersion brand and I believe they have plus sizes. |
I'm the 19:51 poster, and I forgot about their Xersion brand! I have a great hoodie from there that has held up really well. It's also really well-priced.
Personally, I never find anything at Kohls or Target, but I'm Petite and overweight, which maybe makes it a bit tougher. |
Shorts are awful if you have chubby legs! I've lost 17 lbs and have about 17 more to go. I wear tight spandex-y capris for the bottom. I have a Nike pair and a random pair from Ross. The key is to get one with a drawstring at the waist. Otherwise they fall constantly plus you can adjust the fit as you lose. For tops, I have a couple of long cotton tank tops from Walmart. They are not in the workout section and they are $3.88. I can't stand shirts riding up when I am exercising because I am self-conscious about my belly. I work out at a boot camp style class twice a week and run three times a week and I only have 3 outfits. I plan to get more when I lose more weight. I just do a lot of laundry now. ![]() |
Even when I was 120lbs the shorts never worked for me, OP. It's about your body's shape not your weight.
That said, I always buy at Ross, Marshalls and TJMaxx. Cheap stuff and wonderful quality. I wear capris (tight on the calf - the loose ones make you look 10 years older) or yoga pants and a loose T-shirt. I've always worn it since I was a teen and this is what I'm comfortable with. |
I'm not the OP, and you have clearly never been overweight. It isn't just looking dumpy, it's that lots of workout clothes ride up, fall down, bunch, twist - I spend half my time trying to yank my clothes into the right places. No one wants to see my back fat anymore than I want to display it. Apart from that even fat people want to look well dressed. No one likes looking like a sad sack with no self worth. |
I don't run do take this FWIW, but I'm 50 pounds overweight and bought a pair of Athleta yoga pants (and a long baggy shirt). They are the most comfortable things ever. I walk, bike, and lift weights wearing them. And they last! |
Rock on, OP! You should have a smiley face in your subject line. I'm also 30 lbs overweight and am really grateful you posted this! |
OP, what are your concerns, mainly? I weigh 200 lbs and have trouble finding shorts that give enough support to my big fat gut. I carry a lot of weight in the stomach area, and that is my main concern (more so 50 lbs ago, but I still have a lot to lose). Running shorts just don't offer the support that I need. If that is one of your concerns, let me know. I found some shorts that are very supportive in the tummy area. Don't have the link on me right now but can post it later. They aren't the prettiest things but they work. |
I LOVE the compression capris from Old Navy. I also 20+ lbs overweight and I wear them with a sports bra and tank top and its perfect for me. Also, they hold everything in WAY better than regular cotton capris and are actually pretty flattering. |
I buy the Champion spandex capris at Target. I am 30# overweight and buy size large. If I wear ankle socks, it makes me feel cooler in the summer heat even though I'm not wearing shorts. |
I have several pairs of Nike capri workout pants that I have been able to wear during 30 pound weight swings and up until 7 months pregnant. They are great. Maybe a bit loose when I am at my low weight but they never started to fall down. |
Another idea is to try Marshalls or TJ Maxx or Nordstrom Rack. They have lots of selection in size XL and usually enough capris so if you are short like me (5'2"), you can always find something. I was 70 lbs overweight this time 2 years ago and even I was able to find a decent selection at these places.
It was hard (and boring!) but I am down almost 60 lbs since I started. I'm sending thoughts of support so that you will be successful too! |
