People can learn to swim at any age. So if you child hasn't learned by 7,9, 13, 22 or 40, it can still happen.
How much time do you spend at the pool? How much time do you spend in the water with your kids? 6 weeks of lessons a year, is probably not enough to learn in 2 or 3 summers. Especially if you're not getting in the water for play time in addition. Give it some more time. |
| My DS learned close to 8 even though athletic. Once it was starting to click, we did lots of pool time to "cement" the learning. I notice with my other kids that once they start learning, best to get lots of pool / play time. Looking back, I would have gotten more pool play time with my DS earlier |

I used to teach private swim lessons, and this is normal for a lot of kids. Progress can be really slow because no teacher should ever force the issue especially with children who are fearful, that can really make the situation worse!
Sometimes private is the way to go, and sometimes not- I always was amazed at the successes caused by the "peer pressure" in group lessons. It is all about comfort so watching others can be helpful. I suggest a lot of no pressure time in the water with you or siblings and friends. I always started a lesson with children who seemed anxious with the first and only rules- have fun and be safe! Good Luck to all on this one, It can take some time- but when you see a child who has struggled with this and the pride it gives them- it is so worth it! |
