Talk to me about elementary school lunch

I've also heard that the line is very long, but we don't start K until next year so now experience yet. Interested in these responses!

My son just finished K. His school has the 6 lunch periods that start at 11 am. At the beginning of the year when the kids were getting used to how to buy lunch (type in their PIN, etc) it was hard to buy lunch and have time to eat it, but later in the year that didn't seem to be a problem.

The food is junk (along the line of kids menu pizza and nuggets) but it is a nice option to have when you want a break from packing lunch every day.

I heard the lunches are awful. A mom said she was visiting and saw a kid get a totally burned hamburger. The kids don't complain - they just don't eat it!
I also heard the line takes so long that they can't get enough to eat in time. My son needs to eat every hour so I have no idea how he will make it until lunch. I can't see him waiting in line only to find out he doesn't like what they are serving.

My oldest was in K last year. The first half of the year, he loved the novelty of buying his lunch and asked to do that every day. But by the second half of the year, he was done with that. I think he didn't really like the taste of the food after the novelty wore off.

He never said anything about the lines.
