It's not a dumb question.

I like the idea of packing things in to the hat and then packing all around it an putting it in a hard case suitcase.

You have obviously spent some time at www.youareanass.com.

Pack all your shoes in a single layer in the bottom of your suitcase, individually wrapped in plastic bags (or in pairs). Also put books, any other heavy, flat items.

Fill in all the gaps between the shoes with small rolled up items of clothing that will not crush (socks, undies, scarves, bathing suit).

Pack the next layer with folded but not super crushable items (or things you intend to iron)--t-shirts, button downs, etc. Leave a "hole" in the middle of this layer.

Take your beach towel or sarong, and roll it into a cylinder that is the diameter of the outside of your hat. Full the hat crown with soft packable things like more t-shirts or undies. Wrap the outer crown in the towel/sarong, and put the entire kit and kaboodle in the hole left in the packed items.

Pack more stuff on top.

I do something similar to this, shoes as the first layer, then clothes with a hole in the middle, packing the hat upside down in the suitcase, bracing with clothes and filling with soft items. Works like a charm!

Agree about the packable one: http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/72434?feat=76753-ppxs&dds=y

Go with that hat suitcase.

I think this is why you see a lot of people at the airport wearing sun hats boarding flights to sunnier locales. Just wear it and stow it under your seat.

Sure, but that only covers one hat. The hat suitcase is the only way to go for multiple hats.

I liked the idea of the hat suitcase but the PP said it only carries 7 hats. I am looking for a way to carry twice that number of hats. With most airlines limiting you to one carry on bag I do not want to have to carry two cases. Any ideas?
