Cancun/Riviera Maya -- besides being cheap, is there a reason to go?

I'm the PP who visited when it first opened. At the time, I didn't have young kids, so I didn't pay attention to that sort of thing. I think it could work, based on my recollections as well as poking around on the website. The rooms are really spacious, so that's nice. They also have a kids pool and dining. When we went, there were definitely some kids, but the place was so empty it didn't have a feel of a family resort or a couples resort, or whatever.

It seemed like they were going for a fairly serene vibe (even apart from the fact that it wasn't crowded). So I don't think there would be a lot of entertainment sorts of things for young kids (like for instance, at a Disney resort where they host character dinners or whatever). But if you want a beautiful place with a great beach, nice pool, etc., then I think it would be a great choice.

Looking around the website makes me want to go back ....

Yes! We've gone multiple times with a 1, 2 and 4 year old. It's the perfect balance of laid back luxury. We've also been to the Rosewood Mayakoba next-door - it's out of this word, and also surprisingly kid friendly - but too expensive if you ask me. We LOVE the Fairmont.

One of the world's top dive spots.

According to whom?

Scuba Travel Guide, among others. Few are in the area in question, hence I thought it worth mentioning.
