what is the going rate for housekeepers?

Re. overpaying. I think it really depends on whether the person is doing a good job or not. I had a person clean my house in an hour/hour and a half for $75 (about 1100 SF), but it was totally spotless and she was a whirling dervish of activity during that time.

We pay $20/hour. She comes in twice a week for 3 hours each morning.

We pay $75 for a 2br/den/2ba in G-town. It takes her about 3-4 hrs. She does a great job. Maria - life.love.ms@live.com, (703)910-1085.

It does sound crazy, but with a housekeeper, you are paying for about 2-4 hours a week, whereas with childcare, it is for at least 40 hours a week. Paying $100 every couple weeks seems more reasonable than paying $800!

But, I do agree with your theory, except for the uneducated part. Education does not and should not determine salary. It's about supply and demand and skill set. I personally feel lawyers and actors are overpaid, but the demand is there. And, I would rather hire and pay more money to a lawyer who is savvy and slick and will win my case over someone who is a Harvard grad and takes 7 years to settle a no-brainer case.

Exactly. Try posting a 'housecleaner needed' ad anywhere around here and say you'll pay $30 for 3 hours of work.
