OP, there are so many things people from here don't know about NYC, it's just as well. You can like both, it's allowed. Visit NYC often. We went recently and was amazed at the fact that though it has changed so much over the years, it all seems for the better. Remember, the personalities are not what bring people to D.C. You will not get the metropolitan culture and vibe and experiences here. It's not you  For many, D.C. is a trip not the destination. My wish for you is that you meet some ambitious, successful, nice, down to earth extroverts (bad word here) who like the same things you do and are not afraid to laugh. Ignore the opportunistic, shallow, backstabbers and what can you do for me's - they're worthless and they know it.
