Why do you update your facebook status or post pictures while you are on vacation?

I like seeing vacation photos of people I am actually friends with. In fact, I will usually say "post your pics on FB". It also avoids having to hear a blow by blow recap of the actual vacation which can be quite a boring conversation.

If you take a photo on your iPhone it takes about 10seconds to post it to FB. Not a big deal.

I tend to avoid it because I don't trust that someone couldn't access my FB account and know that we're not home. I also don't have the locator/FourSquare capability for that same reason.

Doesn't mean I don't like seeing the pics from friends' and family's fun times.

It's like flashing a neon sign: "Come rob my house." Stupid.

Who do you folks think is going to rob your house? Why would you be facebook friends with anyone you don't trust not to rob you?

Ditto Foursquare.

Although come to think of it I don't see anyone actually USING Foursquare anymore.

i dont see how this makes any sense.

arent these people your "friends"? are you mostly friending criminals or something?

its not like you went on with jim vance, gave him you home address and informed him and the rest of dc that you will be out of town for a week. you are saying this your "friends" on facebook.

This.

But wouldn't the burglars have to be facebook friends? I don't get it.

Why do you believe FB is that secure?

I post because I take a zillion more photos when I am on vacation than doing anything else, and I'll of course see a cute photo of my kids that I want to share with family back home.

Not worried about people robbing my house. I have insurance and two dogs. Let them take what they want. Rather they rob when nobody is home!

i post on facebook that im turning my alarm on when im away from my house so my heathen friends dont think twice about robbing me.

once i said i was gone for a week and really stayed hom all to see how many of my friends would try to rob me and to my surprise 10 of my friends tried to break in my house.

i shot them all dead

I believe that there aren't house robbers who are hacking facebook in order to check my status updates.

I like vacay pics and updates better than most other postings. I really don't care if you enjoyed the soccer game or plate of calamari.

Because my kids are extra cute while on vacation and their grandma wants to see

Because I have FREE TIME while on vacation and if I don't post them then, they'll never get shared.

Because my friends harass me if I don't.

I wish people would ONLY post vacation pictures and updates. I am so much more interested in your trip than I am in your commute or your dinner.

As for why I do it, it's because I have more time when I'm on vacation, and because I'm seeing and doing more interesting things worthy of sharing.

I agree with a PP that there are a lot of people here who need to delete their FB accounts and remove this source of unending angst from their lives.

As for the rampant paranoia... let's see... I'm a computer hacker who has the skills to get in to people's relatively locked-down FB profiles, and I have the time to sort through hundreds (thousands?) of profiles a day, to find a person who's on vacation. I also have the stones to actually break into someone's house. What makes the most sense: that I will use my skills and my time to burgle houses, or that I will use my skills and my time to access online financial information? What is the risk/ reward calculus here? Hmmmm??
