I believe this is genetic. To some people, beer tastes good. To others, it tastes like horse piss. Not much you can do about it.
I'm serious. My child has a genetic condition, and in doing research on genetics, I have come across blurbs about genes that affect almost everything, from whether you gain weight from eating a diet of fried food to whether you like the smell of cilantro. |
| Funny, all my drunk friends try to accuse the nondrinkers of being excessive drinkers. Don't worry, no one actually believes them. |
| My roommate was like that. Used to order milk in bars! I made up for the difference. |
| Drinking a glass of Riesling as I read this so I'm clearly no help. Really NO drink appeals to you? Even a margarita? They're so sweet and sour and delicious. I find a Crown and Diet Coke tastes like Diet Coke. I don't think it's a real problem, though I do feel sad you can't enjoy the wonderful pleasure of DH taking the kids Christmas shopping and sitting down to a glass or three of white wine... |
| I don't like most drinks either. Beer, wine...doesn't taste good and doesn't make me feel good. There are some mixed drinks (margaritas!!) that do taste good, but I rarely bother ordering them since I just prefer the taste of coke. |
| No suggestions, just sympathy. I wish I could drink a little more to relax in social settings (I like most white wines) but I often get sick, usually after 2 drinks but occasionally after 1. Wish I knew why... Definitely not genetic... Sucks... |

Me too me too. I cant stand the taste. i can tolerate jack daniel fruities though. i like the buzz n get it quick so i dont have to endure alot of the stuff drink long island ice tea. i needed alcohol to dance at the club. I dont like mojitos or wine or beer. I was told my gma never cared for alcohol either but both my parents like either wine or beer .blahhh
Im a sugarholic with my Sunkist Soda and apple juice |

I'm the same way, OP. Although I honestly haven't aggressively gone out to try different types of alcohol to find "the one". I've tried a few types of wine (don't ask me what they were now) and had champagne at weddings and rum in spiced cider. That's about it.
The fact that my mom gets a severe reaction to some types of alcohol makes me care even less, honestly. If you don't like it and you think it may make you sick don't bother. I make up for it with my chocolate addiction though. Yum! |
Same here. I do not like wine and have honestly never had a beer (smells like dirty socks and I can't get past that!) I have a mixed drink maybe 5 times a year. Honestly, it's never been a problem socially and I made it through college just fine. I like to party with the best of them, I just always manage to stay sober. The bonus is I've saved a ton of money over the years!!

| Pinnacle "Whipped Vodka" and diet orange soda. It is awesome. |

I can't stand the taste of beer but I did discover a couple years ago that I could get down a glass of cider and now i actually enjoy it. So i order cider when people order beer and they look pretty much the same so no questions!
I am not like you in that I love wine and most mixed drinks...however there are many times when I wish I could just pop open a beer but I can't do it! Try something mixed with a bit of vodka - it is pretty tasteless. or Mojitos - they taste like lime and syrup! |
| OP here. Glad to know I'm not the only one who feels this way. I definitely think there is something specifically different about the way some people taste and metabolize alcohol. Based on my experience it doesn't seem like it's genetic, as everyone in my family likes to drink socially on occasion. Even my grandma loves her Bloody Marys. I wouldn't say this causes me "social problems" but I think it would be fun to be able to get a buzz once in a while without FORCING myself like a kid taking medicine. |
OP again. You're definitely not a pusher--I would love to find a signature drink. But I swear I feel like I've tried it all! Wine is definitely out--it makes me sick. I can do beer once in a while but it has to be very light--Corona Light, Coors Light, etc. I've tried all manner of fruity cocktails and I can sometimes choke one down if the fruit taste masks the alcohol taste, but I certainly don't enjoy it. The closest I've found is something like a hard lemonade/cider/iced tea, but again it's not like I actually like it. As far as non-alcoholic drinks, I LOVE regular Coke and pretty much any type of non-diet soda. I also like most fruit juice, but orange is my least favorite. I prefer apple, cranberry, pineapple, or lemonade. I don't drink too much juice or soda in real life because of the sugar, but I'm not really concerned about that for my "signature drink" since it's not like I'd be drinking it every day. (Unless I really love it, in which case I will turn into an alcoholic and ruin my life and blame you, 15:34.

| Funny, I like the taste of most alcohol (not scotch or whisky) but don't like the buzz. Or the calories! |
|
OP not to be a pusher either, someone already mentioned the whipped cream vodka (I prefer to mix it with ginger ale!), but I find most of these flavored vodkas mix really well with all kinds of soda. My Favorite is cherry vodka in coke, tastes like a cherry coke!
Everyone is different, I don't think you should have to feel like you don't fit in because you don't drink. There are plenty of good reasons why people don't drink, you shouldn't have to feel bad- "I don't like it" seems like a pretty valid excuse to me! |
