White person here. Yes, it's true. As we age we start hating. I'm in my mid 30's now and can feel the white hatred growing.

I think you're guilty of stereotyping as well.

She said in her experience.

"In her experience" or not, she's made a wide generalization in saying "most elderly white people." Would you feel the same if I said, "In my experience, most male Muslims are terrorists?!"

I read it as that most of the elderly white people she knows (perhaps her relatives) hold prejudiced views about other races. If most of the male Muslims you've met were terrorists, it wouldn't mean that most male Muslims are terrorists, but it would mean most male Muslims that you've interacted with are terrorists.

She did not say "most of the elderly white people she knows." Nice explanation but not what was said.

Anonymous wrote:Sigh. White woman here. My grandparents have been gone for a while now, and I've been missing the presence of that generation in my life. We've got a lot of 75+ y.o. "original owners" in my 1960s suburban NoVA neighborhood. I've really enjoyed getting to know quite a few of them, but inevitably, at some point in our friendship/acquaintanceship, they'll say something really racist. And then I'm done.

I was raised in '80s era P.G. County, which resembled the racial mix of Sesame Street, so I know I'm somewhat sheltered from this stuff, but seriously, are all elderly white people racist? FWIW, my elderly neighbors seem to hail from all over -- NY, MA, SC, etc. Maybe I need to move to Takoma Park.

Yes, of course!

I don't agree that most elderly white people are racist and I thought that it was a stupid question for the OP to ask. That said, when someone says "in my experience," I take it to mean just that. That it means personally (for them).

21:51- Save your yucks, bitch.

Yes, because I worry about being classy on an anonymous message board.

My grandparents were racist then realized mid-1980s probably that racism isn't really tolerated anymore and I never heard or saw anything to think they were racist. Last year my Grandfather got very sick, died, leaving my Grandmother behind. She has dementia and I've heard her say racist things a few times in my short interactions with her. Unfortunately, there is no point in correcting her as she has little ability to really reason anymore. My parents (baby boomers) however did not pick up their parents racist beliefs.

So what is it that they say?
Do they use different terms for people of other races? I mean the term AA is fairly new and was not in such common use back in the day

Its a choice to be racist, "stuck in your ways" does not mean that you lose the ability to change.

No worries here. In roughly 10 years, most of this generation will be dead. I'm sick and tired of forming relationships with elderly, white people at church, in my neighborhood, and at work and then out of the blue having them hiccup back to the 1940s.

Eh you give yourself too much credit. Racism and eugenics are in the genes. It doesn't start developing as you get older.

22:03 It sounds as if you are just as intolerant as the elderly individuals you are so sick of. You grew up in a different time. PC terms have changed (and continue to change). Perhaps they just don't know the current term to us to refer to someone of another race. All of the elderly bashing that has been going on lately is disturbing. If you live long enough you too will be old and judged for your drain on society, antiquated speech, poor taste in gifts, etc.

I guess I am quite intolerant whenever I hear an elderly, white person use the word nigger to refer to black/AA people.

Don't generalize, please, but FWIW my parents were/are racists (one is dead, one still living).
