Don't worry! I have a first grader with fine motor issues. The school (FCPS) has been very understanding. Last year, for some things that she was supposed to do at home, if she was too tired or it just wasn't going to happen, she'd dictate the content and I'd write. I'd just include a little note and the teacher was fine. My advice is to let the teacher know early. My DD is in private OT. I told the teacher and sent in her pencil grip. The teacher was fantastic about it. This year (1st) has been a little more of a struggle, but we're working it out and the teacher knows she's trying. I think the key is to let them know so you can work with them. Also, give them input into what will help your child. For my DD, the pencil grip was a help. Also, this year they had them doing word study in composition books and the notebook style paper just wasn't the developmentally appropriate type for my child and it mattered (her word study notebook was a train wreck). I talked to the teacher and she agreed that I could buy a primary composition book (with the dotted line paper). It isn't the panacea, but it helps some. You just have to work as a team with the teacher. Be open to her (his) suggestions and also let the teacher know what you think might work and see if she if s/he is open to your suggestions. |
