My neighbor has trash in their yard.

Here's the site for Fairfax County http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/code/ . We've had a lot of problems with boarding houses in our area and my neighbhors and I have used this site a lot.

They were pretty humiliated to see my entire family picking up THEIR garbage one evening as they returned home from dinner. Now they secure it, and they don't speak to us, kind of a little bonus.

Perfect. Nothing like a little dose of shame to motivate people.

Actually, this was quite brilliant!!

Some people are trying everything that they can do to survive, shame may not be the right answer. Maybe you could find it in your heart to have empathy instead of disgust... Maybe ask them if there is anything you can do to help the situation, instead of teaching your children to look down on people in need.

My neighbor puts bags of garbage in her yard. The entire yard is covered in trash. She is on housing assistance and gets child tax credits and lives a more affluent life than I do. She actually rented a car and took a vacation, so I have no pity on her. She has used her back yard as a garbage can for the past 6 months and it stinks and she won't clean it up. She acts like it's MY fault because i'm bothered by it.
I absolutely do not feel sorry for her. She is an awful neighbor who doesn't care how annoying her garbage is.

One neighbor took about a year to get it, but used to have all sorts of trash in the front and back yard. Mattresses, toilets, old appliances. Now they don't do it, they got the message that it is unacceptable.

I suspect other counties, and DC have similar programs.

YES! We had to do this on our neighbors in MC as well. If they do find a violation they are given an amount of time to correct it. It was a little embarrassing the day the inspector showed up and talked with the owner. It helped in the short term and I have the number readily available for each and every time they go back to their old ways. I'm sure they know it's me, but it's a great resource.

We have an HOA (where people are SUPPOSED to use trashcans) but at least half of the people just carry out mountains of bags on trash day. I always wonder where they've been keeping these bags since the last trash day. Both our neighbors have cans.

We don’t use cans because dog walkers keep leaving their dog poop in our cans and they smell awful (like I get dizzy walking past them). I have better things to do than weekly washing of my trash cans because of dog walkers.

And yes they are only out for trash day, but we get a lot of inconsiderate dog walkers so it’s unlikely I will get trash cans in before they have made a deposit.
