Stocking stuffers for my mom

Is this a common thing to give stockings full of gifts to adults? In my family we only did stockings for kids- I'm just curious how widespread this is.

For us, the stockings were a way to keep the kids occupied on xmas morning- they could immediately open it when they woke up but had to wait for us to come down for the real presents.
