Jaywalking in the 'hood

What about hanging out in large groups outside? I see that more in 'hood areas. Maybe they have more time to socialize and commiserate.

They have less money to hang around in wine bars, like my friends and I do. I have plenty of time to socialize, I just don't do it out in the open, because I can afford to be someplace climate controlled, with table service.

Most of us probably jaywalk or cross against the light when no cars are coming, but that's not what I'm talking about. When I drive through certain low-income neighborhoods in Baltimore and DC, I feel like I'm constantly trying to avoid running someone over. What is up with that?

Welcome to the future of driving through urban areas. Slow the fuck down.

Ever notice how they stop ON the white lines so you and other pedestrians have to walk in the street, or when you're in the crosswalk and they're just DYING to make their turn, how they nearly plow over you? What is up with that?

Quiet bipedal loser. The car drivers are commiserating!

Re: 'commiserating' in Large groups outside...are you kidding me? 'more time to socialize and commiserate'?

Seriously, there needs to be a 'poor people are just like you!' column in us weekly, next to 'stars are just like you!'.

Poor people like to talk to their friends, just like you! But instead of texting or emailing or calling friends from inside your cozy well decorated house with cable tv and ac, they do it in person!!!

Way to the extreme but many serial killers have the need to control and often feel like they have little control in their real lives. They say as society becomes more equalized we will see more women and minority serial killers.

Exactly! People who dare walk place rather than drive in cars are just like serial killers. Man, how dare they get in my fucking way!!!

Hmm. Now that I think about it, perhaps the whole jaywalking thing is a reaction to how we've arranged our environment to make car driving as pleasant as possible, and send pedestrians the message that their responsibility is to "Get The Fuck Out of The Way"

If by the 'hood you mean GWU campus I agree but you forgot to mention the part about texting and having earbuds in so they have no clue what is going on around them.

Have you ever noticed that city people in an urban area who walk a lot instead of drive know how to negotiate through traffic briskly on foot, and are adept at moving out into an intersection, and will not stand around waiting at red lights for the walk sign, like say, people who live in Germantown? This goes for wealthy Parisians, New Yorkers, Dupont Circle-ites, Silver Springii, and really anyone who lives in an urban area ("the hood"). It has nothing to do with income level and everything to do with time spent walking through traffic.

I hate that.

I'm usually one to let people cross. I see a lot of mothers and grandmothers with babies in strollers and toddlers who are having difficulty crossing.

But the FU look drives me nuts, and more often than not, I give it right back.

Ever notice how when you are driving, you hate pedestrians, and when you are walking, you hate drivers?

It's not just in the 'hood, it's on every college campus I've been on.

You mean to assert their power? I read about a study that said something like people in job positions that are not highly respected such as service positions are more likely to be rude? to customers as a way of making up for those feelings.

No need for a study - anyone who has been to the DMV will tell you this. (The real DMV, not the ridiculous acronym that has been popping up for this area.)

And everyone hates cyclists, all the time?
