Improving Spelling

OP, my DS sounds like yours..but really spell check does not solve the problem unless he is good enough to descern the correct spelling from many similar looking words..and you have to be close enough to get the right word to come up. Challenge him to write a paragraph using spell check. See how well he does. my son has done several spelling tutorials..Wilson and ?? can't recall another well known one but problems sill persist despite strong reading skills.

I know last year, he was definitely NOT retaining words/rules/sounds he had "learned" earlier in the year.

This year, he is in the lowest spelling group in his class. Even kids who I tutored last year on 1st grade sight words are in a higher group.

His trouble seems to be that he freaks out and simply can't sound out words, esp. when it comes to blended consonant sounds - at either the beginning or end of a word. ("sh" sounds really are trouble.)

Would the All About Spelling program be a good fit for us?

I'm the pp who originally suggested All About Spelling. My DD's main problem is that she can't sound out words to spell. She somehow hears herself saying something completely different. For example she spelled the word "paper" as "pater" because she was convinced she heard herself say the "t" sound in there. Blends were problems too. All About Spelling has really helped with her sounding out words, so I think it would be a good fit for your DS too.
