Do you tutor grammar or sentence structure, by chance? I'd like to get your name.

University of Vermont
Fairleigh Dickinson in suburban NJ
UConn
Wesleyan
Boston University
Bowdoin
Skidmore

Would help to know his interests/whether he wants urban/suburban or country environment

Another vote for Merrimack College in Andover

That's quite a wide range there. Not sure that Bowdoin, Skidmore or Wesleyan are viable backups for someone who may not get into Amherst.

And FD is a backup for all the others, I think. Although my information is dated, those of us growing up nearby had some not-very-flattering nicknames for it.

Fairly Ridiculous...is what we always called it.

Reality check: Wesleyan is not a backup for someone with average SAT scores.

OP, your son will get in somewhere!

These are not "safety schools" by anyone's definition.

Isn't this something college counselors are supposed to handle?

Wheaton College near Boston.

Agree with pps that Wesleyan, Bowdoin etc are safety schools for the ivies, not for UMass.

This. For the Ivies, or otherwise.

I'm not sure BU or UConn would be in play either. UMass Amherst has always been the party school of the UMass cluster. He should apply to UMass Lowell and UMass Dartmouth as well.

This is what you would call a Helicopter Parent. Look up the definition...
