Is this rude or okay?

Who are you to say chewing gum is rude? Did Emily Post make up that rule? I mean, is it rude to breath air as well?

If you don't know why chewing gum is rude then there is no way you could understand. It is common and it looks like a cow chewing its cud.

It's common? Really? Maybe a cow chewing cud looks elegant like a person chewing gum. Gum chewing being ride is merely your personal opinion, not the law of etiquette.

My opinion: Chewing gum is not rude.

Chewing anything with your mouth open is rude. Making smacking noises, popping, blowing little bubbles - all rude if you're older than five.

I don't know that I'd call it rude, but I certainly find public gum chewing annoying. And it rarely happens with a completely closed mouth.

LMAO! I have been in a major store for kids in Maryland where people are obnoxious more often that not. I heard this terrible poppong sound - SMACK! SMACK! SMACK!! - I turned around and laughed in this grown woman's face. I expected to see a five year old! Maybe I should have given her a SMACK! SMACK! SMACK!

You sound like an idiot.

I know this is silly, but I always worry when someone offers me a mint that I have bad breath!

Chewing gum is uncouth. Looks awful, sounds awful, and to me is someone usually masking bad breath or a psychorepetitive habit.

OP I think you need to come back and clarify: whose mint, whose mouth, whose hand was doing the popping, and whose office was it? The original post was confusing.

Yes-- these are the essential questions!

I am guessing that the OP had someone in his office, popped a mint into his own mouth (without offering the colleague one) and now wonders if that was rude.

I think it is socially correct to offer your colleague one if you are taking one for yourself.

When I am at lunch with people, and they whip out the hand sanitizer, they always offer me some too, I think under the same theory.

I rarely offer a mint/candy/gum/etc...if my friend wants one when they see me getting my own, they can ask.

We all need to get a life -- me for reading this thread for 2 pages, and others for posting.

This always puzzles me. Do people really not realize when they have bad breath?!!
