Us too. The interesting thing is that we found some common ground after taking turns and I also shifted more toward his side on what I'm willing to do and I found myself enjoying it (for example: camping) and he became less miserable when doing what I like (e.g. staying in a hotel at the beach).

Would closer-to-home options need to be in the mid-Atlantic, or is the West acceptable?

My travel personality is more like your husband's, but that said, what about the Pacific Northwest in the summer? Fun cities with great restaurants and cultural attractions (Seattle, Portland, Vancouver) great outdoor activities not far out of town (and in town too, for that matter) and then you could rent a house on the Oregon coast or in the San Juans or wherever to just chill out. Or renting a cabin at Lake Tahoe?
