ack, daycare called, they're closing now b/c of aftershocks...

As someone who lives in Los Angeles now, I am reading all these posts while laughing hysterically.

The real reason OP's daycare called her at ten minutes until four is so that she would pick her kid(s) up by closing. They proba ly heard that Metro was running at 15 mph and that traffic was seriously backed up. So if OP and other parents hadn't left, they wouldn't arrive by the time daycare staff had to leave - just like parents often don't do when it snows.

In this area mass hysteria rules supreme. On 9/11/01, I went to an obscure book store in McLean, VA and was told I had to hurry because they were closing at 1:00 p.m. as they were afraid this strip mall would be bombed. After I left book store, I went to Giant and the woman in front of me had six packages of 12 rolls of TP. The man behind me said, "Maye she is preparing for evacuation." He and I laughed and she gave us a dirty look.

No, sometimes they can be "foreshocks", meaning that the subsequent quake can be larger.

I think it is a little odd that you were browsing in an obscure book store on 9/11.

Well, that's nice. Your buildings are designed to withstand earthquakes.

OK I get it. People are worried about aftershocks.

But aftershocks can happen for weeks after the earthquake. Are they going to close for a few weeks???

What happens if there is a large aftershock, less than 5.9 but still strong, buildings are evacuated again, government closes, this time the metro shuts down. How will you feel when people can't get to their children in daycare.

I agree it's extreme but if they don't close and something happens then they'll be criticized for not doing anything.

exactly- this place is not designed to withstand earthquakes- period- so it's a safety issue. If you want to put your LAX ass on the line and assume our rickety buildings are aok- then go for it.

Well that's funny since I lived in LA too.

And the only LA quake this big since Northridge was in 2008. Guess what, a bunch of office buildings in downtown and elsewhere evacuated, and mass transit ran on a reduced schedule.

Yep. LA handled it exactly the same way. You are a bullshitter.

And we mock your reaction to 1/2 inch of snow. I mean, an earthquake once every hundred years or so vs. earthquakes all the time. That's super funny! Ha ha ha.

Go Away Now.

Seriously, 9/11 "obscure bookstore" poster- you think there was too much hysteria on that day? Thousands of people died and thousands more began the nightmare of life without the most important people in their lives. Show a little respect.

Several large earthquakes had smaller quakes before the large one.. This would be my main concern.

Sure, it is a concern.

So now, knowing that concern, what do you do about it?

Close all daycare centers and office buildings? For how long?
