Eaton vs Janney

I second the last poster's sentiments. I've had experience at both schools - we moved to Cleveland Park last year from AU Park so my son went to Janney for 2 years and has now been at Eaton for 1 year. We liked Janney but we LOVE Eaton. Aside from the advantages of a more diverse student and parent body, Eaton really places an emphasis on the social and emotional development of the children. It does not "teach to the test" but, rather, focuses on a broad academic and social framework. In spite of this (or perhaps because of it), Eaton's test scores went way up in 2008. In fact, its test scores among equivalent racial groups are actually higher than Janney's (i.e. Eaton's white students had higher reading and math scores in 2008 compared to the white students at Janney). There is a visible excitement and energy at Eaton under the new principal. We went to the see the school's musical, Seussical, and the buzz and positive feelings in the auditorium for the kids and the school was palpable. There were several students in my son's class last year who had transferred to Eaton from a private school and all of their parents are happy with the move.

PP, can you speak to the quality of the aftercare? Thanks.

We haven't used the aftercare program (called JEAP) ourselves but know people who have and they seem to really like it. It is very reasonably priced and the woman who runs it is highly regarded. One couple we know uses it even though they don't really need to - they said their son likes playing with his friends at school so he stays late 2 days a week. There is also a before-school program.
