Can you be allergic to metal?

I cannot wear metal earrings, I tried everything and the only ones which don't cause an infections are the 24 K gold ones which you put in to get ears pierced, but they are just covered with 24K gold, so the coating wears off and then I can't wear them. Not so bad that I can't wear watches. You could try painting back of watch/clasp with clear nail polish.
