I think that's a bit much. She is a fervent activist in her kids' school system, and very far from a lunatic. I am glad that there are people willing to run against incumbents (and people to support them & help their campaigns) considering the crap that has gone on with the school board in the past. I'm not a partisan voter (and Catherine is supporting candidates endorsed by both parties, btw) and will be voting for some of the candidates she has worked with. Don't believe the vitriol. |
| Is it true that she got fired as a room parent and PTA volunteer? |
| I heard that too. I'm trying to imagine how obnoxious she must be to get removed as room parent. |
Anyone that suggests to her "candidates" that they behave as they have is hardly a role model for the children of our County. I'm hoping she and her candidates go down. The only one that will probably not is Steve Stuban. The rest of them have been making absolute fools of themselves. |
| Apparently she asked too many questions ane didn't back down on queue. |
Very, very hard to keep Lorenze and Epstein straight these days, so here's the guide: Lorenze is like the lead "Heather" from "Heathers." Nasty and totally full of herself, and richly deserves to be taken down several notches. Epstein is supposed to be smart, so folks kept waiting to see if she'd turn out to have a bit of an independent streak, like the Wynona Ryder character. No such luck. She hasn't done anything to distance herself from Lorenze. Instead, it's like she's grateful to be able to sit at the same table as the blond McLean cheerleader(s), looking down on the kids from the wrong side of the tracks who don't have new shoes and get "needs-based funding." Ewww! Gross!! In the process, she's made Janie Strauss look like a cross between Sandra Day O'Connor and Mother Teresa. It takes a special talent to get people across the district and county to rally behind an 18-year incumbent that they were almost ready to replace, but "Heather" Lorenze came through. Only the "Lorenze candidates" who've created some serious distance between themselves and Lorenze, like Steve Stuban and Megan McLaughlin, are likely to be standing at the end of this movie. |
|
Voter: Can somebody tell me why I'm voting for Epstein?
Lorenze: Because you're an idiot, Dad. |
I think you mean on cue, not on queue. Does "didn't back down" mean the same thing as "never shut up and listened to anyone else"? And, there is a difference, apparently lost on Lorenze, between a "Profile in Courage" and a "Profile in Scourge." |
|
And even if Lorenze et al. get elected, the world will go on pretty much as normal. What are these folks running on other than "NO MOAR DALE"?
They have counterparts in Loudoun, where the local GOP -- that is when they're not putting Zombie Assassinated Obama on their e-mails -- are running on a NO MOAR HATRICK platform. |
| My goodness. It appears both Louise and Jane have some ardent but crazy supporters out there. I think I'll just stick with the issues they stand for thanks. |

I have known other people bounced from PTA's or as room parents. I think Jane Strauss has done lots of favors for some neighborhoods as far as boundaries. For example homes as far as the Loudoun County line are bussed to langley. That includes residences near Herndon High. Another example is an area that shares a street in a devlopement where one part goes to South Lakes and another langley. This part of working in tandem with Stu Gibson to keep some constituents out of more diverse schools.
Instead of going to the Kilmer AAP center there was an administrative boundary change for a street so some could go to Longfellow AAP. Strauss also obtained extra funds for schools like Kent Gardens. |
The Langley boundaries were set by Strauss's predecessor, Stu Mendelsohn, before Strauss became a School Board member. Those with a long memory know that he was the one who adjusted the Langley boundaries so that some students who live south of Route 7 in Reston and Vienna attend Langley. Some people - not zoned for Langley - are unhappy that Strauss kept Langley out of later boundary studies. Kent Gardens ES is in Strauss's district. Epstein's main complaint is that Strauss supports needs-based funding that benefits schools in poorer parts of the county at the expense of Dranesville schools, so maybe it's not the worst thing if she found some money for the French immersion program or something else at Kent Gardens. Sometimes I wonder why anyone would want to be on a School Board. You get criticized no matter what you do. Either you "ignore" your constituents or you're doing "special favors" for them! |

I read on Fairfax Underground that the McLean vs. Langley football game is tonight and both Strauss and Epstein should be at the game. If anyone goes to the game, can you post here about the reception towards the two candidates?

Janie, is that you? |
