"Flash robs"
In the United States, in 2009 and 2010, the city of Philadelphia experienced a wave of crimes that either started with the intent or led to the destruction of private property, rioting, violence, and personal injury.[17] As a result, police used pepper spray to disperse crowds and arrests were made.[38][39] These events were often referred to as “flash robs,” “flash mob crimes,” or “flash mob violence,” suggesting that every public gathering coordinated via social media is a flash mob.[40] Organizers of innocuous legal flash mobs consider “flash mob crime” and similar terms inaccurate and damaging to the reputation of flash mobs.[41] Law makers and lobbyists in the city are pursuing enacting bylaws to counter these groups by extending curfew hours, limiting the hours of bus passes, and holding parents more accountable for the actions of their children.[17] Bill Wasik has expressed "surprise by the new focus of some of the gatherings" and called it "terrible that these Philly mobs have turned violent".[17] Violence by African-Americans resumed in the summer of 2011, drawing condemnation from mayor Michael Nutter, who said that participants "damage [their] own race".[42] A curfew of 9:00 pm was imposed in two districts.[43] Summer 2011 brought similar incidents to Maryland, Cleveland, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Ottawa, Ontari |
How am I incorrect? Because I didn't copy and paste Wikipedia like you did? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flashmob I believe I was correct, though I wasn't as specific as you were. And yes, the misnomer of 'flash mob' in regards to thieves began in Chicago with the robberies on Michigan Avenue and the Memorial Day incident at Oak Street Beach. |
| As my wise mother always said, "Nothing good ever happens after midnight." |
No, you are still wrong. They are not "whimsical" & "fun" - sometimes they are but they aren't performed by fairies and unicorns sprinkling puppy confetti. |
| Ok, what I think is crazy is that they think this is all new. I grew up in Denver graduating in the late 80's. Several 7/11's were closed because they would have groups of teens come in and rob them after school. Kids have been acting stupid for a long time independent of curfews and cell phones. |
| Anyone caught should be arrested and convicted so they have to deal with the conviction stigma the rest of their lives (eg, applying to college, getting a job, security background check etc). |
Those adjectives were my opinion. You tried to factualize it and then negate it with Wikipedia. I think flash mobs can be whimsical (i.e.:"hey where did they come from and what are they doing?") and fun, too. BTW, maybe everything in my life is as nice unicorns farting fairies and puppies so don't be such a debbie downer. |

This is funny.... people need to understand the difference of flash "mob" and flash "rob." The media needs to learn the difference also.
On another note, curfews have nothing to do with crimes. Sure, crimes are more likely at night, but it happens during the day also and not just by teens, but by grown adults. The county is not going to pay cops to ride around in search of teens...a waste of time and money. It should not be a cops job to keep children in the house after midnight. It is the parents job. |
