I want to get a decent backpack without going to Target or LLBean

Unless you are going to sew your own backpack, good luck with that.

Hang a big-a$$ keychain from one of the zippers.

Might be too babyish for a kindergartener, but my daughter has a really cute monkey backpack from SkipHop.

Does your school have lockers for the K students? My son's backpack is from LL Bean, but his backpack is always in his locker during the day so there is no chance of confusion. Plus I have to say in all the times I picked him up last year, I never once noticed another K student with his same backpack (there were 105 K students total). He has the orange critter pack.

REI, Marmot Mountain, or North Face? I like Jansport backpacks myself, they are pretty well made with good pocket setups.

Second the keychain idea, our DD has a big tag shaped like a sea turtle with her name on it, I forget where we got it, that goes on the backpack with a clear plastic loop.

We got one at childrens place for $13 with matching lunch box, reviews said it would hold up, they have several cute designs

I just wrote my son's name on his backpack in permanent marker.

We got the llbean ones for our kids. Even though we are in Vienna, very close to the llbean store, we haven't had the problem of getting our kids backpacks mixed up with other kids... But probably because DD hangs enough keychains and other doo-dads from it to make it COMPLETELY unique. Added bonus is that the llbean ones will last forever. (got her one from Target that fell apart before the fall semester was over the year she was in K... The llbean one is still going strong 2 years later....

My DD actually got a very nice backpack from target. It's the brand with the swiss army logo. It was plain colored and very sturdy. In fact, I'm convinced it will last AT LEAST one more year. Not an appropriate size for a kindergartener, though. I just point this out because of all of the snobs who say there are no decent backpacks at Target. This one is at least as nice as an LL Bean back pack.

Costco has the High Sierra brand backpack for $16.99. It looked really nice. If we didn't already get LE backpacks I would be going for those.

I heard that you should not write your child's name on the outside of the backpack. Someone could come up to your child and start using their name because they saw it on the backpack, and your child could be confused and think they know the person from somewhere and feel more comfortable going off with them.

LL Bean

If you eve rhave na issue with it they replace it no quesitons. We had one that needed replacing, not a major issue but didn't want to hav a few days without it, they sent us the new one and then we shipped the old one back. I don't think Target woudl do that or many other stores
