Actually, I think the whole thing is overblown. I think he did not word it as well as he might have, giving the context after the question rather than before, and, while she may have meant it's an insult to call her a flake, it sounded like she was saying it's an insult to ask about it. Also, her answer, while probably politically wise, does not explain why such a serious person says such flaky things. And I still don't understand why she did not accept the apology, or even better, that no apology was necessary.

Incidentally, she spoke of her post-doctoral degree. I assume she meant post-graduate (a trivial slip), or does she actually have a doctorate?
