I agree. They have a nice nature center, some kids' activities, s'mores at night, boats. A few days will be plenty though. Another option is the Canaan Valley Resort in W.Virginia. They don't have kids' activities/a kids' program per se, but there is plenty to do in that area. If you are looking for a family camp type experience then you'll need more than a long weekend. |
I was there in the fall and it was lovely. Nice rooms, nice facility. It's not the Greenbrier but it is charming. It was renovated after a flood in just the last few years - not sure when it reopened but if you were there pre-renovation it is possible it is very different now. |
| Op here. Thanks for the additional suggestions. Rocky Gap is one that I was thinking about previously. We've been there for tent camping previously. When I looked at the lodge it struck me as more of a golf/conference center more then a family oriented lodge. Am I wrong about that? Again, I just want a place where the kids can be kids and there is kid friendly food and outdoor activity attire is acceptable. If Ihave to chase them around and put them on their best behavior it won't be so fun for them. (That is one of the reasons the Greenbriar or Homestead is not of interest - aside from the price.) Canaan Valley looks cool but maybe for kids just a bit older then mine with more stamina for hiking and they don't appear to have a lake. I'd also love some first hand reports on Wintergreen in the summer. Would that fit the bill? |

I'm the one who suggested Rocky Gap - I think they are marketing to families - they have kids activities and if you look at the website there are pics of families - I don't think it is all that upscale - it is definitely not the Homestead.
Wintergreen is a good idea though also. I haven't been and the reviews are a bit all over the map but I know people who have had good experiences with little kids there - not sure there is a lake though. |

Rocky Gap Resort/State Park near Cumberland, MD. There is a nice hotel there with kids activities, aviary, biking, canoeing/paddleboats on the lake. The state park has a sanded beach that you can literally see from the hotel. On site restaurants and kids eat free. When we went last August is was about $80-90/night if I remember correctly. I believe it is about 2 hrs from DC.

| Rocky Gap poster - forgot to mention that there was a pool, golf course, and spa. We really liked the scheduled activities part for the kids. |
| Capon springs |
| Capon Springs looks interesting. PP have you been there? |
They only have bluegrass events one or two weekends a year. I think one of them might be pretty big, but we have never been during that weekend and haven't seen or heard any bluegrass. |
