Uur letter includes a form for choosing between the center and Local Level IV at the base school, and states that "Once you have made a commitment, you may not change this placement for one academic year." Just wondering why several of you are leaving Local Level IV base school programs, and would appreciate any insights that you have before I elect between the bases school and the center for my child. TIA.
First of all, I think each school is different. Some LL 4 programs seem very strong with almost a full classroom of AAP kids. In other schools half or more of the class may be filled with non-AAP kids. In our particular school, about half of the class was non-AAP. Our school also did mixed classrooms for Language Arts (i.e it wasn't just AAP and the best level 3 kids in the class - it was a mix of all levels. There were a lot of behavioral problems in the LA class - I think there will be fewer in an all AAP classroom.) We also didn't feel that Science and Social Studies were necessarily any different than what was being taught to the non-AAP students. I also felt the classes were too worksheet-heavy with not enough hands-on, thought-provoking projects. Maybe it won't be better at the Center or maybe it will but we're willing to take the chance. If it doesn't work out, we know we can always go back. Overall, I felt like it was AAP-lite. My child got compacted math but not much else. I have friends in LL IV in other schools who were more pleased with their school.
