| There is nothing inherently difficult about loading and unloading a washer/dryer, or folding laundry. It is something that, as a PP said, a seven year-old can manage. It is definitely something that teens and pre-teens should take complete responsibility for with their own clothes. If they wear dirty clothes, so be it. |

We do a marathon of laundry each weekend, saving the stuff that won't wrinkle for last. That way, if we don't get to the stuff that won't wrinkle we do it on a weeknight and it likely sits dry in the dryer or a hamper clean for a day or two before we get around to it. We're lazy like that, but our son is too little to notice.
We have compact machines so we end up with a lot of loads per week (6-8 at least). |
I have 5 kids and actually think the opposite is true. More clothes for me makes laundry more overwhelming. If forced to do it often, it simply can't pile up. We can't get it done in a weekend unless we sat home the whole weekend and ran the washer and dryer constantly. I do 1-2 loads a day and several loads the day I change everyone's sheets. I have one of those laundry sorters with the three canvas compartments that I love. The kids sort their clothes there and I run it as soon as I see it's full. I need to take some of the advice given and enlist their help in putting it away. |
| yeah, I can see how it wouldn't work with 5 kids. I have 1 toddler and a shared laundry room in an apartment building, so if I time it right, I can do 3 or 4 loads at once, too. |
| Sorting laundry by colors is another huge waste of time. Virtually everything can be washed in warm water. Balance loads for size and heaviness only. Don't buy clothes that have to be washed in cold. Pre-treat with Spray n' Wash if you have heavy staining. |

We got a washer with huge capacity so we do two loads per week.
DH showed me sorting colors and whites for baby clothes is a waste of time, now I just dump everything together. Taught 2 year old DD to put away her stuff, it;s like a game to her, so quality time plus laundry put away. |

q for those who don't sort:
you really don't sort, just throw everything in together? What about red and hot pink? Dark jeans? Do you use a color catcher or anything? Depending on the volume of laundry we have, I'll do between 2 and 5 loads of clothes (sheets, towels, table linens are separate). low volume: 1 load lights & whites 1 load darks & brights & reds high volume: whites lights brights darks (navy, black) reds & pinks |
| I don't sort, unless it's brand new. I do a load of warm with whatever clothes, bright red, pink, blue, and white, all together, and then another load for cool, dh's work khakis and the like. Maybe another load of just towels if there are that many. No sorting, and I've never had any colors bleed. |
|
Non-sorter here. We throw in red, purple, jeans with whites, yellows, etc. Never had anything bleed, even brand new stuff.
I was sorting one day and DH asked me why I was doing that and he said he never did when he did DC's laundry, so I said, hey, works for me! |
| Not trying to be snarky here, but if you don't sort do your whites stay white? I hate sorting but am too afraid to ruin my whites. Do you even just put whites with lighter colors or really just throw it all in there? |
| To keep up for my fam of four I keep our clothes to a minimum. I agree with the idea that if I am forced to do it it won't pile up. We try to only have a littler over a weeks worth of clothes for our kids-he have way more ourselves. I throw a load in before work, throw it in the dryer as soon as I get home, and fold it while watching tv. I am horrible about putting it away though... |
| I'd love to stop sorting and just throw everything in. Can someone clarify for me...why do you wash some in warm and some in cold? I thought that washing in cold preventing clothes from running? I'm embarrassed to admit this, as I am 31 and have been doing my laundry (and DH's, and now DD's) for some time...I guess I have been doing it wrong! |
|
Non-sorter here, to clarify, we don't sort kids everyday clothes.
I sort DH's and my whites/lights and colors separately since our clothes are more expensive and more likely to be worn for years. And their whites have stayed very white, we wash them in warm water. |
|
Another non-sorter here. I use warm water for the kid's clothes and our casual clothes because I think warm water cleans better than cold water. Not sure if that has any factual basis though.
Then the more delicate clothes I use cool water along with a more gentle setting on the washer. As for whites getting dingy, I honestly haven't noticed that being a problem. But DS's wbites do get dingy looking just because he makes such a big mess all the time. You can always refresh the whites by doing a white load and adding some chlorine bleach. |
| The washer timer is another big help. Put in load in the morning, set timer to wash right before I get home. Transfer load to dryer when I get home, take out when DC's go to bed, fold, then put away. |
