That looks like my great aunt's house. |
This is obviously a joke. No one in their right mind would want to buy the linked pieces -- and I don't mind some tasteful Victorian.
The dead giveaway is the pure white couches and kids. |
Thank you all for your suggestions. I will check out some antique shops and do a little research on actual styles. We are really excited about decorating our new (100+ year old) home! |
If you can handle an older house, you can definitely handle real antiques. Both require a little new knowledge, but it's not overwhelming. For example, some of the older finishes may be wax or shellac, instead of polyurethane, and you'll want to polish it differently. Talk to the dealers (Kensington Row is good, as others say) and they'll tell you how to care for what you buy.
But it's not like antique furniture is massively time-consuming. And your kids won't have difficulty learning they can't run their toy trucks into it. I agree with the poster who said to stay away from shiny anything, wood or fabrics. If your house is 100+ years old, then it's the age of our house. It may actually be Arts and Crafts or Edwardian, or even a colonial style because plenty of wood colonials were put up around here in the 1st few decades of the 1900s. |
You may have to do some road-tripping for your antiques; antique dealers in this area tend not to buy Victorian because it doesn't sell well.
If you'd posted this a couple of years ago I could have given you a couple of pieces neither I nor anyone in my family wanted. And the dealers didn't either. |
We once stayed at a lovely old greek revival B&B, in upstate New York. The owner had filled it to the rafters with mauve victoriana. It looked like she got one of those Victorian craft magazines and had done every project in it, for months. It was pretty jarring with the architectural style of the house.
Don't make the mistake of going with too much mauve, or that lurid green, that might make your house look like a brothel. |
