Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| Wow. All these posts and no one suggests asking the student how she feels about the time commitment to travel soccer? Whether she wants to choose travel soccer as her thing (requiring 4 meetings a week plus travel time)? That if she decides to give it a try it will require ABC and we'll expect XYZ? |
| 12:41 - maybe your DS is too smart for run of the mill sports. We share the same child and are now doing rugby - so far, so good - loves it. |
|
Haven't tried rugby. Can barely get him to go on family walks occasionally.... I'm starting to think he may be a vampire since he seems to avoid outside activities at any cost (lol...smile)
Glad to hear its working for you. I will definately suggest it. |
| Can anyone tell me about the reputations of BRYC and Burke Ath. Club for girls travel soccer? |
| It sounds like many of you on this board should watch 'race to nowhere'. |
| Thanks troll. |
| Not a troll. Parent with child at AAP. But I think the movie makes a good point that it's up to parents to help kids not overschedule. |
| Stop pushing your judgements on parents asking for help. Go away troll! |
Many gifted kids have exceptional abilities in other areas. Some, like art, would be easy to schedule once a week or so, or to do on the weekends only. But in many sports (soccer, gymnastics, etc), once you reach a certain level of ability, the only option available to you is to train multiple times a week or quit altogether. If the sport is truly the child's desire (not the parent's) and the child can keep up at school while participating in their sport, I see no harm in it. |
| well said! |
| Reading the OP it doesn't sound like the gifted child here has sufficient interest in soccer to take on the additional time commitment. Sometimes the answer is "no, thanks." |
