I had my first at 6 weeks to confirm pregnancy because I had no idea when my LMP was, then we had another at 8 weeks to make sure everything was developing. Then that was it until 20 weeks.
If you want one, I would talk to your provider and find out what you need to do to have one. I don't think your request is unusual or unnecessary. |
6-8 weeks to confirm due date, then the screen if you want it at 10-12 weeks, then 20 wks. Supposedly the best time to "date" the preg. is 6-8 weeks. |
Dr. Footer (he and Dr. DeSouza are each other's backup since they are in solo practices) also does one at every visit. |
My OB (Tchabo) does not have an u/s in his office, so it is not standard practice for him to give one every visit.
For both my pregnancies (first was a m/c) I got a dating sono at around 6 or 7wks. For my DD, we then did the nuchal at around 12wks and the standard 20wk sono. That was supposed to be it in his standard of care. however, I am AMA and have a family history of toxemia, so around 37wks he started sending me in for weekly non-stress tests and sonograms to check amniotic fluid levels. My unscientific guess is that if your first appointment isn't until 10wks, then your OB figures you can just wait for the nuchal screen u/s 1 week and a half or 2wks later. He'll likely use a doppler and hear the heartbeat every visit, though. Seriously, the most beautiful and amazing sound ever - the national symphony had nothing on the sound of that little thump-thump-thump! |
I go to Georgetown, where they do a dating u/s during the first visit (around 8-9 weeks). If you go to a small practice, they might not have a u/s machine in their office to be able to do that though. |
I had my first around 7 weeks to confirm and date the pregnancy, then one around 13 weeks for the nuchal translucency screening, and another at 14 weeks because my midwife couldn't find the heartbeat (anterior placenta in the way, as it turned out) and didn't want me to leave freaked out and worried. I go to the midwife practice at GW. The next will be at 20 weeks for the anatomy scan. |
Had my first at 5w 5d (but was coming off of an early loss and they wanted and U/S before scheduling my first prenatal visit). Boy was I glad I had an early U/S - since I was diagnosed with a twin pregnancy. I'm still trying to get used to the idea of twins (now at 15 weeks). |
