Where are all these Koreans in Annandale? I live behind NOVA - Northern Virginia Community College, it's mostly white, not asian. I wish I knew where you people got your information.

Check the statistics on the schools sites, the %'s are majority korean. Sheesh.

Also, OP - this is an interesting peek into Annandale http://annandale.patch.com/

The Asian population in Annandale is in neighborhoods that feed into Annandale HS. The closer you get toward Woodburn/Prosperity/Mantua, etc. the numbers go down a lot.

Canterbury Woods and Mantua are a couple of good elementary schools in sought after neighborhoods. They feed into Woodson HS.

I really HATE when people say this about Annandale. I live on Stark Road. My kids go to Wakefiels Forest. My oldest attends Woodson which is consistently ranked a top school in the nation, a top ten school in the area. You want to avoid schools east of the beltway, not to to the west heading towards Fairfax. Anything in Annandale around Northern Virginia Community College is perfectly fine. Anything feeding into Woodson is fine.

There are some less savory neighborhoods that feed into Annandale high school, I believe the boundary is anything east of Wakefield Chapel Road. Check with the school, do not trust the realtor to be honest with you about schools.

And do not trust this site to give you a humble, honest overview of the school system. The opinions here are not objective and everyone is taken with class, status, the "poor" areas, and the terrible schools (which in this area really are not all that terrible).

This is the Cluster info for Woodson - this is where you want to be in Annandale, feeding to Woodson, not Annandale HS - http://commweb.fcps.edu/directory/bycluster.cfm?cluster=3#p2021

Did you read the comments from the previous posters? Two other posters pointed out that there are different high schools in Annandale, and identified Woodson as a good high school cluster. Just saying...

OP here: Thank you so much everyone for your opinions. I've finally arived in the area and started house hunting. All that I read here will help me make an informed decision. Coming from NYC, I can already tell you this is a more civilized area! At least it doesn't get so vicious in this "urban moms".

Give it time...it will (and it does)

Just an FYI, check out savewoodson.org - the desired neighborhoods off 236 between Wakefiels and Guinea that feed to Woodson are potentially being rezoned to Robinson.

Do you mean Lake Braddock? One of the options being looked at as part of the Annandale HS boundary study might re-zone all of Wakefield Forest neighborhood to LB. Currently half of WF goes to Woodson and half to Annandale. I don't see how either of those options requires Woodson to be "saved"?

But the school board panel recently recommended that all of WF go to Woodson. I know this is still not final, but the school board typically does adopt what the panel recommends.

Yes, I meant Lake Braddock. I didn't name the website, I think it's kind of silly, too. The issue is Lake Braddock is rather far and kids have to cross two major roads to get there if they walk. I went to Woodson and often walked home from school, I could get home only having to cross Guinea. That wont be an option if the kids are going to Lake Braddock.

There are worse things than ending up in Lake Braddock or Robinson. Both schools are pretty good - I have friends who went there and friends with kids at both schools. I think the housing is cheaper than Woodson. (If you don't mind being slightly further out, Burke is actually a good place for families.)

Woodson is one of the best schools in the county and the country. People are pissed because they bought in the Woodson district to specifically send their kids to Woodson. I agree there are worse things than ending up at Lake Braddock or Robinson, but unless you live & bought in the neighborhood you really can't speak to how big of a deal it is.

Would you be okay with your kid's being redistricted to a high school much farther from your house and not as sought after? It is a big deal to the people who chose to live their lives in an area based on a school.

I'd be okay since the middle school years are notoriously far worse for bullying and other negative behavior, and the middle school is already overcrowded. Please redistrict to a less crowded school!

Frost isn't overcrowded. What middle school are you talking about?

OP - we live in the AHS section of Annandale - just west of the beltway. Very affordable, great community with lots of kids of all ages. Safe, people walk around alone 24/7. Bus right to pentagon. Real sense of community here that I didn't find when we lived in arlington. I have heard bad things about AHS, but only from those who don't live here. All the high school kids love it - all are involved in the IB program and drama/music and have great attitudes and hang out all the time. Our neighbors and their kids say that gangs are not as bad as before when there was a lot of bad press, and leave other ethnic groups alone. AHS is like two high schools - those in IB and invovled in activities and those who are not. We may get redistricted to woodson, which is fine too. But, fyi - Kids down the road who go to woodson say it is a top school and therefore a pressure cooker. They were complaining that there is lots of competition to get into colleges with quotas for the school. Kids in our street got into their college choices from AHS because there is a smaller pool of competition and they get ranked higher even with the challenging IB program. I will also say that one of our neighbors is a principle in an elementary school nearby and informs us that Woodson has its share of crime issues too - it is just covered up more because of the school reputation. I have no details and it really shouldn't matter, but don't let everyone fool you.

Anyways, just my two cents. We are happy in that part of annandale... no kids yet - but they'll love the area when we do.
