If you have a spare room, consider an au pair-- much cheaper than a nanny.... or a share...

Another single mom here.

It is very hard to afford a nanny on household income less than $150,000. I am a single mom near that income level and having in-home care for my child for at least a year was my highest priority. I opted to share a nanny at my house for 2.5 years in a full-time share. Then I continued in a part-time nanny share and part-time preschool until my son was 5.5. It cost me about $125,000 over 5 years, 2/3 from cash flow and 1/3 from savings. It was a great choice for me as I was lucky enough to have 2 fabulous caregivers and 3 very good share partners over that period.

If having a nanny is your priority, do whatever it takes to accomplish that goal. Sharing is work but it can allow for a nanny over daycare. You do need to assume $25,000 in costs as of 2008.
