What is the most current/updated style of tile for a foyer (butts up against hardwood)?

Ditto.

I don't know whether tile floors scream suburbia, but I agree that they look cheap and outdated- especially any type of ceramic tile (sorry). I'd also replace your current floor with hardwood that matches the existing floor. If you want to break up the look, you could put a rug over the hardwood. We had slate floors in the foyer of our old house and I hated them. The only reason why I never replaced them with hardwood was because I knew we wouldn't be staying in that house for long.
