where do sophisticated 40 yo moms buy clothes?

I'm always leery when someone doesn't share their background on the website in support of their ability to do the work. Styling is an unregulated field so anyone who claims to have "good taste" can slap up a shingle. You get what you pay for.....

Try Boden. They have cute stuff. I usually buy dresses and tunics from this store. I love the designs and color they offer and it's not too expensive.

I used Tara Luizzi at TaraStylesDC and she was amazing. The first time I met with her she came to my house and did a "closet edit." She was very helpful and honest in telling me what clothes worked for my body type and even convinced me to keep some things I was going to get rid of by showing me new ways to wear them. We put outfits together from my existing clothes and then during a 2nd meeting we went shopping to supplement what I was lacking in my wardrobe. She is extremely knowledgable and fun to work with. She has a lot of experience in very high-end boutiques in DC, New York and Boston. But don't let that scare you. We shopped at Nordstroms, Ann Taylor, J.Crew and Anthropologie since my budget was not suited for Barney's I highly recommend her.

i used to be a HORRIBLE dresser -- very matchy matchy and "cute." ugh. anyway, i asked a friend who i thought dressed well to take me shopping and give me the brutal truth. she did! i get compliments now on how stylish i am. i also like tim gunn's advice -- no woman should wear capris. and no pleated pants.

How much does something like that cost?

Not OP but wanted to thank you for posting this. Like OP my clothes need overhauling, and I tend to get compliments when I wear tunics over pants, so I may try some of these. Question for those who have bought Boden: How does it run? I am a petite 2 or 4 -- and often cannot wear certain lines (no Eileen Fisher, very little from Banana Republic, etc) because thigns run too big. Can you please tell how Boden runs before I waste a lot of money on shipping?

Thanks so much!

In my experience Boden tops run true to size and bottoms run slightly large. Dresses work best for those who are the same size on top and bottom (I am large on top and their dresses always look huge around my hips/waist).

On Boden's web site there are usually reviews for each item and people often give a lot of information about how that item fits. Boden doesn't seem to take down negative comments either, so you can usually get a pretty honest picture.

Store: Ginger in Bethesda. Their staff is great, and they are the perfect mix of casual/sophisticated (Yoana Baraschi and Calypso are my current obsessions, they have both).

Stylist: Alison Lukes changed my closet like I never thought possible--I think she, like most, charge around $100/hour, and she's worth every penny. http://alisonlukes.com/

NP here. Any stylists not in Gtown? Every time I do business with someone there, their attitude precedes them.

Alison Lukes = zero attitude. She's completely low key.
