That probably has to do with the larger Jewish population in NY.

I think some of the stores just have their 'regular' hours on the sites.

Safeway by me is open.

I don't remember everything being closed by me, growing up in NY. Is this new, that everything stays closed?

We were at Costco yesterday (up in Frederick!) and they had signs that they would be closed today, but that was about it.

I'm from a small town in the South, and EVERYTHING closed for Easter! When I moved up here it would drive my Husband crazy when I would say "Is so and so open? Oh, no, they must be closed, it's Easter", when most things were always open.

I was going to say this must be an East Coast thing. Everything's usually open on the other Coast.

I grew up in this area and I don't remember everything being closed on Easter at all. I'm still surprised that the mall is closed...

Is Tysons mall closed?

I grew up here and I remember everything being closed. I think more places have been opening for Easter recently.

Either that, or as a kid my parents just told us everything was closed because they wanted us to focus on church and family. Now that I think about it, that might be the more likely explanation.

Dang it, Target is really closed?! I'd expect that from WalMart w/ their Arkansas roots but not Target...was hoping to get some shopping done today.

Well, when I lived in NYC 15 years ago a lot of smaller retail would be closed for shabbos. These things are regional. Further into the deep south EVERYTHING is closed today for Easter.

Things should be closed. There was once a time when everything was closed on Sundays period... and now people complain about things being closed on one of the holiest days of the year!

What is shabbos? Don't they have laws about selling alcohol on Sundays, too? I wonder if it's better to be closed today to save money on salaries and overhead or are they losing more in lost sales esp in this economy.

I need to go to Staples. There's nothing on their website and my local store won't pick up the phone. I've been on hold for 5 minutes

We are a much more diverse society than we used to be. There are many families for whom Easter Sunday is no different than any other Sunday.

It's only holy for some. Not so much if you're Jewish or Sikh. Just another day to the many people who are not Christian. I'm surprised so many places are closed. You'd think they'd want to make whatever they can. Lowe's was actually pretty busy this AM. People have the day off - why not let them shop?

Move to most parts of Europe. Everything is closed there on Sunday and it sucks!!!! (especially if you work during the week and need to do your shopping on weekends)
