two young kids and laundry - would you prefer smaller, less sophisticated unit upstairs or bigger

I love the idea of doing both if that's possible for you, OP, but if it's either/or I'd do basement. We just moved from a house with a stackable upstairs unit and it was a real pain. Two adult-sized sweatshirts took up an entire load, and if you tried to stuff more in it just came out crappy. We couldn't really run it at night because the spin cycle was loud and there was no way to turn off the dryer beep. Plus I find front loaders annoying anyway because you can't add something to a load once it's started (e.g. tiny socks).
