Maddux is part of the IvyMount School which does have a program for Autistic kids |
| BUT...Maddux states in their literature and if asked directly that they cannot accommodate kids on the spectrum. They are completely separate program type than Ivymount. They are under its auspices, but serve very different types of students, with Ivymount accommodating many more in depth and severe needs. In my experience, it's difficult to pin point who Maddux will and will not serve. Basically kids who don't need a lot of intervention, but just enough 'tweaking' to prepare for mainstream elementary education. I think McLean is the ideal comparison to Maddux, in that they will offer some supports, but not extreme. And for both schools, for some reason they publicly shy away from reaching out to ASD kids--and kids who require a great deal of OT or PT support. |

My point in mentioning the Ivymount program for autism was that that program may be more appropriate for kids who have more needs for autism related therapies, Having been part of the Maddux program, it is better suited for kids that have mild learning and/or behavorial issues that make it difficult to function in a regular classroom. The idea is to help kids be mainstreamed so that the behavioral issues that can come from learning issues are mitigated. Kids become labeled as issues in the classroom and that can really hurt in the long run. Mclean and Maddux aren't reaching out to the ASD kids because other schools offer better programs such as IvyMount and Katherine Thomas. |
| I could have sworn Maddux says on their website their population includes high fucntioning autism. I though it was Lab school thart made it clear they didn't want any form of PDD because they could not provide the ideal accomodations. From what i understand Maddux provides more support than McLean, but less than Katherine Thomas. |

" Children generally come to The Maddux School with cognitive strengths but may demonstrate mild vulnerabilities in: social and play-skill development pragmatic language self confidence/self-esteem sensory integration motor-planning fine motor skill development self-regulation |
| Thanks for posting that. If they take kids with (mild) social/pragmatic delays and sensory issues and motor planning issues, etc than clearly they don't rule out those with PDD/ASD. It just sounds like they can probably only be a fit for a child on the spectrum who is high functioning and doesn't have behavioral issues. |
| exactly. The child needs to be a good match with the group of kids at that age level. They know what they are looking for during playdates and applications. |

Why was this bumped? It just reignites the whole thing where you basically can't use the word ASD. There may be kids with these challenges (list symptoms of ASD), but if you use the word autism on the thread a bunch of parents come on and say nooooooooo those kids go to other schools because apparently the entire spectrum of autism is lumped together as "those kids."
I know a child with Aspergers at a big 3 school who has friends and good grades. There were issues with anxiety at one point and the school worked with the family. He gets intervention outside of school. |
| Maddux does take kids with high-functioning ASD, such as my DC who will start there in the fall. I really believe they don't get too hung up on the diagnosis, but they're able to identify kids who would do well in their program. I know it's hard to really nail down the type of kids that Maddux takes. The tour/open house made us realize that it will be a good setting for our child. |
MADDUX is not part of Ivymount. Current parent. |
Dc isn't on spectrum, unless ADHD is added to Asd in the new dsm. Dc has ADHD. |
| There are kids with mild PDD in the school. Maddux is sep from Ivymount but they do share space some of the resources like the library and art teacher. It is unique. Beverly Farms child care is also there and they share space too. Maddux takes kids who will work well in their environment. Each case is unique and is treated that way. If you are interested go a for a visit and apply. The only way you will know if your kid is approp is through the application process. |
http://www.ivymount.org/ Maddux is promoted as a program within the Ivymount umbrella. Former parent. |
Mclean school is not the ideal comparison to Mclean. Maddux teachers are much better trained in special education. The program has much more supports in place for behavorial learning. |
