| No, friend attended for me. Everyone was given a random spot on the waitlist via lottery. There was no distinction between 3 and 4 year olds. Friend said everything seemed on the up and up, but I'm a little confused. |
I'm confused by this. I attended the lottery and as a previous poster stated everyone was waitlisted, so I don't know what you mean by "a spot in the initial class lottery"?? |
I should have said "presumed" initial class. They picked names at random, and stuck them up next to a numerical list. Once they got in the 60s, I understood this to mean that the spots for the class were filled. Someone's number was called when they had reached the 70s, and the Director wished her luck, saying that perhaps some people would choose not to enroll, and she might have a chance. They have no idea how many will accept the spot they are offered, but if you were among those initial 60 or so, you are guaranteed a spot - that's my understanding. |
Okay, I just wrote this last message, and realize that my understanding of this lottery is totally off LOL! I thought that there was a total of 60 or so spots for 3 and 4 year olds combined? Maybe I was too quick to think that we had no chance (should have waited until my DC's number was called, but I had to go back to work). |
| were students separated by Spanish dominant / English dominant? |
No, every kid had a number that was on a card in a transparent drum that was rolled before each drawing. So it seems the rumors about a separation of the lottery by language were not true. |
| Yeah, my friend didnt wait around to see where we landed either. I'm wondering if there will be lots of movement on the waitlist. The new location might be less appealing to some because it's not as centrally located as their current spot. |
| This is strange. I was sure the director verified at an open-house that they had to look at language to keep a good balance. Also, was there no separation based on age? How are they keeping a good balance there if everyone is in the same pot? |
I posted earlier about how I attended and misunderstood the process. Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is how I think it works: All 500+ applicants (regardless of age) were put into the lottery, and their numbers were pulled out one by one and lined up, from #1 to # 500-whatever. There are about 60 or so spots for 3 and 4 year olds combined. Say, for example, there are 30 open spots for 3 year olds, and 30 spots for 4 year olds, and of the first 60 that are pulled out of the drum, 40 happen to be 3 year olds, and 20 happen to be 4 year olds. The 30 spots for 3 year olds would all be taken, and 10 of those remaining 3 year olds would be placed on the WL. All 20 of the 4 year olds chosen would get a spot, and the next 10 4 year olds chosen (wherever they are in the list) would be offered a spot. Does anyone else have a different interpretation?? |
| That makes sense. Thanks for trying to clarify! |
Is this the case whether you get a spot or not? |
When I called the school this morning before the lottery, I was told that those who were to be offered spots after the lottery would be called some time in the next 24 hours. |
