Moving South

I am from North FL and responded to the other FL thread. I guess there are a few places in the US worse than Orlando...but not many!

Senior Manager with a large consulting firm. Went to a great college and went on to get my MBA.

Don't bother moving to FL if you are going to move inland. Stay near the coast. Even 10 miles from the coast is too far.

we considered FL bc both sets of grandparents live in Palm Beach County-we were looking in Weston. I remember speaking with a woman that was head of a private school there and she told me point blank that many of FL private schools are the east coast's better public schools. Most public schools were not good. We ended up outside of Boston and love it here...we got to FL for the winter breaks.

I lived in South Beach for a year in grad school. Topless models at my pool during the middle of the day. Unreal.

Humid. Relentlessly humid.

I have a friend who moved down there from VA. She hates everything about it. The school sucks. The bugs are horrible. She is dying to move back.

For the longest time, Florida ranked 50th in school quality, so yeah, I could see where OP would be concerned about the quality of middle schools in the ENTIRE state. They might actually still be 50th.

It seems that most people posting here love the DC area and feel great pride in its diversity, progressive thinking, acceptance of people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, etc. to the degree that they think nothing of making disparaging comments about the educational system of other areas and states. Yet, how many DCUM posters actually send their children to local public schools?!

Your prejudice is showing.

That wasn't a "disparaging" comment" about the education system of Florida. It was stating a fact. Hey, someone's gotta be last, and for a while Florida was known for having a really piss poor educational system. I have no vested interested in this fight - I don't much care for the DC area, have no plans to move to Florida. But the facts are the facts.
Only on DCUM can you take a simple factual statement and turn it into your response. That just cracks me up.

Cracks you up?! It cracks me up to hear people criticizing an entire state (surely you realize individual school systems could be very strong) when DC area schools are so bad that many DCUM posters send their kids to private schools. Why? Obviously, it's not a reason for them to not want to live in the DC area.

My SIL lived around Orlando for 4 years and couldn't get out of there fast enough. She and her husband hated every moment of it. Let's see....it's hot as hell and there really isn't much of a breeze, the schools were pretty terrible, and she found a snake in her daughter's sandbox and an alligator ate a jogger a mile from her house. It didn't sound good.

My goodness! You forgot to mention the roaming bobcats, out of control crocodiles, sinkholes that can swallow homes, sharks, jellyfish, stingrays, sunburn, sea lice, red tide, rip currents. and cloud to ground lightning! So glad she made it safely out of the state!

Yes, your prejudice is showing if you think that's the only positive point of the state.
