At what point does one look for a pediatrician?

Anonymous
I'm only 24 weeks along but started looking for a pediatrician last week. My reasoning was that I wanted to find the right one and a lot of the "good" popular pediatricians are not accepting new patients. It took me several phone calls but I think I'm squared away and have an interview session in two weeks.

My OB said to have one lined up by the time I was 35 weeks. I'm 35 weeks now, and I found ours about two weeks ago. They scheduled us for a prenatal consult for next week, which is nice, since I'll be able to meet the Dr. ahead of time, and I can also fill out the insurance paperwork now, rather than with a squirmy newborn in my arms.

FYI, my OB also suggested relying heavily on word of mouth referrals, if possible, beause she's of the opinion that nobody knows better than another new mom if a pediatrician works for them. I don't have any friends that are also parents in my part of NoVA, so I asked a neighbor who was selling me her city mini. She gushed so much about her baby's Dr. that it was a major factor in us setting up a consultation. Hopefully we'll have the same taste in doctors that we do in strollers.
