avoiding or "curing" group B strep

I just wanted to chime in ... not answering your questions - but sharing some info.

I was Strep B + for both of my children. My labor was so fast that neither time were they able to get me the antibiotics. Both times they watched my newborns a little more closely and required that they stay in the hospital 2 full days (not that I had any other plans).

My dr said that with a very quick labor there is little chance of passing it to my baby. I believe the statistics are that in the US, of the women that test + for group b strep, less than 5% pass it to their child through birth and that almost 100% of the time, this is for women who labor longer than 8 hours.

I would also share that I have a cousin who was critically ill due to having strep b passed to him as an infant. This is almost 20 years ago and at that point in time they did not test for it. Knowing a family member who almost died from this, puts things in perspective for me as I too was wondering late in my pregnancy if I really needed the antibiotics.

This is very useful, thank you.

Just for the record, if I have it I don't plan to turn down antibiotics and I do not mean to be encouraging anyone else to do so.
