St. Pats seems to have a steady feed to STA/NCS.

Norwood does not.

In response to pp. Not quite true. Norwood has a steady feed into STA/NCS. From Norwood's website:

NCS
2008: 6 applied and 6 accepted
2009: 16 applied and 10 accepted
2010: 5 applied and 3 accepted

STA
2008: 12 applied and 9 accepted
2009: 14 applied and 6 accepted
2010: 8 applied and 2 accepted

Don't know stats from St. Patricks.

I don't have a dog in this race but am a 2nd generation family with the Cathedral schools.

Both St. Pat's & Norwood have long term strong relationships with all of the Cathedral schools and actually owe some of their leadership success to the schools. The current head of St. Patrick's Peter Barrett was a St. Alban's teacher. And, the former Head of Norwood Tom Hudnut who was excellent was a St. Alban's teacher and his wife a Beauvoir teacher. Hudnut is now President of School at the esteemed Los Angeles Harvard-Westlake.

In terms of current community - I know more about St. Patrick's - it is very close knit - family's LOVE the school -very nurturing with strong academics and outplacement. It does have many social families - but that issue takes a back seat to the school community. I would imagine the Norwood community is very strong & nurturing as well. I would imagine due to geographical placement - St. Pat's has more families from upper NW and Norwood has more families from the Potomac area.

Good luck! You have two excellent choices!

We've found them to be warm, friendly, and very welcoming. People really make an effort to reach out to new families. Easy to get involved with the school, but no stigma to not doing so. I haven't found the moms to be unpleasantly cliqueish at all - real mix of people & types & interests. We didn't even think about the parent community when we joined the school, but have been pleasantly surprised at what a positive, fun part of our family's experience it has been.

The AD at STA sends his children to St. Pats. He is very close to St. Pat's Head and exmissions to STA are very strong. Not sure what #'s were for this year's 6th, but last year 5 applied and all 5 accepted. This year in 3rd, 4 applied and all 4 accepted.

Those are strong numbers, though with an alarming downward spiral. Is this a symptom of what's going on with Norwood, or with the Cathedral Schools. In this economy, I figured it would be easier to get into a private school which charges 30K +.

Sample size too teeny.

Well, I am not the PP, but I think s/he meant that, St Pats has a rather large number of well-known and/or rich and/or socially connected families. Many people on this Forum seem to think the rich and famous are only interested in Sidwell, GDS and Beauvoir for the early years. It is a common misconception.
