| Agree with the European on being comfortable, especially if ur planning on seeing a lot. I went to Paris a lot of times, but the first time I went there, we easily walked 10-15 miles per day. There is so much to see, and not only the ,famous, sights, but just walking through neighborhoods. So, think comfortable, rather than Parisian... |
| Also avoid shorts and baseball caps. |

Get this book! And practice, "Excusez-moi de vous deranger, mais j'ai une question...." Works like a charm. (note I probably butchered something in that sentence- but get the book and follow- it absolutely improves the experience.) |

This is such a ridiculous post. Wear comfortable clothes. You're in Paris to see museums and be a tourist, enjoy yourself. No one but you is going to care about your wardrobe! Honestly, OP clearly you have not traveled much if you're asking what to wear in Paris, instead of asking what to do!
Btw, the Musee D'Orsay is way better than the Louvre. |
| OP here. I actually travel a lot and have been to Europe three times in the last 2 years, just not Paris. I had always heard that Parisiens frown on jeans, sneakers, t-shirts and the usual American wardrobe. I don't really need to go on DCUM for advice on what to see, but I think a lot of the fashion/clothing advice on here is pretty helpful. Maybe I should have posted on the fashion forum, but most of the advice on this post has been very helpful. Thanks! |

I think it's nice that the OP is trying to be thoughtful about how her family will dress while in Paris. To those who feel that they should just relax and wear what they want that would certainly be fine if they don't plan on going into any stores or restaurants. It's just more respectful to the culture to learn about what is acceptable with dress and manner and try to accomodate that when you are a guest of that place.
To the OP... You should certainly not wear sneakers. However, please make sure that your shoes are comfortable because you are going to be doing a lot of walking. Also, many of the roads are cobblestone and are uneven. If it rains it gets pretty slippery as well. I absolutely love Paris. I found the people to be very welcoming and friendly. We made a point to learn about it before going. We also practiced and attempted to communicate in French which I'm sure helped a great deal. A few small tips.....it's considered rude to place your bread on a plate during dinner. You always leave it on the table by the plate. Also, the French eat their french fries with a fork so you'll avoid some strange looks if you just go with it. Tips are almost always included in meals. You should definitely go to Montmarte on the first day or so and get a few items of clothes from the small boutiques. It's the best way to fit in with the dress and you will always treasure those special outfits. I get compliments on my Parisian sweater almost every time I wear it. It wasn't overpriced....maybe around $40. Another big tip is be aware that EVERYTHING is closed on Sunday. I mean everything. There will be nothing to do and nowhere to eat so plan accordingly. |
