what is a troll?

This needs a little more finesse.

1. If you tell another poster "if you don't see my point, then your kid must not be as gifted as mine," you totally deserve to be called a troll. (I've seen this lovely exchange several times this year!)

2. If you insist that your approach is the only possible approach for gifted kids (homeschooling or HGCs, take your pick), you will be called a troll.

3. If you use your kid's giftedness to play the victim on DCUM (see the post above, "nobody understands me!") then you will be called a troll.

HOWEVER, if you are willing to engage in reasoned, open dialogue with other posters about a broad variety of approaches, and if you can resist telling them their kids must be dumber than yours -- then you will do fine!

Nope. You just need to talk about the needs of gifted kids, and people will jump all over you.

See point #3. If you play the martyr ("woe is me!", put hand to forehead) then people will jump all over you. Including parents of gifted kids, because they are embarrassed by your behavior.

D'accord. Except for the part about being embarrassed by this behavior. I don't feel responsible for/implicated in anybody else's martyr complex.

6:45 When you claim your child is "gifted," it is YOU who are telling people "that their kids must be dumber than yours."

You are also telling some people whose children are not in the 130-144 range that your child is less gifted than theirs.

Perhaps you should avoid controversial labels for your children, especially if the implications make you uncomfortable.

Huh?

I'm 6:45, and where in my post did I say that my own child is gifted? Or not gifted. Or highly gifted or not. Or profoundly gifted or not.

Sorry that my calling out your martyr complex has angered you.

But calling me "uncomfortable" with labels I never used for my own kids isn't an effective counter-argument.

Oh wow! You actually told that poster that her kids are dumber than some other kids, presumably dumber than yours! Did you really play so true to type, and rise (or rather sink) to everybody's expectations of you?

You really don't get it, do you? People here are calling you a jerk for exactly this sort of behavior. There is a difference between being a troll and being a jerk, and you fall into the latter category. This makes it difficult to understand why you're "trolling for sympathy" on this particular thread about trolls, but I digress.

But instead of taking the criticism to heart, you keep on being a jerk.

Worse, the criticism only seems to feed your martyr complex, about how unappreciated you are here. Ugh.

10:17 again. And oh yeah, I posted the explanation of TPMS. Yes, besides being smart myself, I have smart kids and have seen lots of smart kids.

Sorry if I need to shout, but you just don't get it:

THERE ARE GREY AREAS, AND DIFFERENCES AMONG KIDS.

YOUR EXPERIENCE IS NOT THE ONLY EXPERIENCE OUT THERE. GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE.

YOU ARE ONLY A VICTIM BECAUSE YOU ARE MAKING YOURSELF A VICTIM. IF YOU WOULD STOP INSULTING OTHER POSTERS (YOUR 10:01 AND 10:05 ARE, FRANKLY, DISGUSTING) THEN PEOPLE WOULDN'T INSULT YOU BACK.

UNLESS, I'M BEGINNING TO SUSPECT, YOU LIKE BEING A MARTYR IN SERVICE OF YOUR CHILD.

OK, I'm 6:45 and 18:56, but not 21:00. And I'm a little confused. I don't get the time references in 21:00 at all, in fact I wonder if this is a cut and paste from another thread. Although I basically agree with the sentiment.
