Why would you keep your last name after having children? Do you want to invite confusion about the child's parentage? I have never gotten that one. Either have your husband take your name or combine the names.

Not OP, but she might think it's race-driven b/c some racial groups have a higher rate of OOW births than others, and therefore the kid will only have the last name of one parent (in most cases).
