When should you reply to work e-mail with a thank you?

Do you guys really open them? Why not look at them in the reading pane and delete? On the blackberry you are kind of stuck opening them, though.

I send them when I think the recipient would want to know that some particular thing was received -- and I like the confirmation when I am the one sending something.
