Changing style of engagement ring -- what is the current look?

I never liked the previous setting, mainly because it looked dated from the day I put it on. Think 1973. I never told DH and just wore it for 15 years. Now is my chance to update the look without hurting DH's feelings, since the metal on the ring is legitimately shot to hell.

What style is current and maybe a teeny, teeny bit trendy? Meaning, the "look" will hold for the next 10 years or so. Choice of metal, side diamond or no, faux antique look, etc.

I can't imagine how a plain round diamond solitaire could look dated. This is a classic engagement ring. It's like saying that a classic Chanel suit is dated, or a plain classic navy pump. I just don't get it.

Navy pumps are dated.

rather than trendy, why don't you just explore styles that you like and think are interesting and beautiful?

I'm a sucker for art deco--have a sapphire ring with deco setting. don't think its necessarily trendy but I get a lot of compliments, and I like it. There are some "ring designer" sites where you can look at a bunch of different settings.

I think vintage design rings have been in style for a few years and the trend will continue. I have a classic style ring with a center princess cut diamond, but I am getting bored with it, so I might reset it in a different more up-to-date setting.

Something that goes with your wedding band.

ps: to PP - shallow for wanting to update a ring? are you the same poster who enjoys living in a house filled with jumping crickets? Bizarre.

Hey I'm the one with the jumping crickets! I was just reading these posts!

Do you know any jewelers you could ask? They could tell you what's most popular. You might also check theknot.com or wedding channel or something - there are always stories on what's new. Maybe look on the Charleston Alexander website or something? Quite a few of my local friends bought their engagement and wedding bands from there.

I think a round solitaire will always be in style, but I believe settings have changed in recent years - they're setting them differently than they used to do.

funny, though - I'd also heard that platinum was softer than gold. A jeweler had told me that with my active lifestyle, I should also consider white gold when looking at platinum bands. (I dislike yellow gold.)

go for a classic look.
mine isn't incredibly fancy but it's a good quality, 1 carat diamond in a simple 6 prong setting. the prongs are platinum (picked for it's incredible strength and durability) and the band is white gold (much more affordable than doing the entire thing in platinum).
like i said, not too fancy at all, but it's definitely noticeable as an engagement ring, works well with my wedding band, and "goes" with pretty much anything because of its simplicity.

Platinum is definitely not soft. My ring is over 100 years old and has been worn by 4 different women in my family. It's not bent, scratched, or dinged in any way. I did have it buffed up a few years ago and I may do it again at some point in the future.

This is a platform shoe-- certainly not the so-called classic navy pump.

Yes....platinum is very hard and difficult to manipulate. You need someone very experienced to make you a setting in platinum.

PP suggestion of Blue Nile is good. They have lots of ideas. Be sure to have your diamond appraised after you have it reset. There are some unscrupulous jewelers who will swap your diamond with a lower quality one while it's being reset.
