Kids With Special Needs and Disabilities

Yikes! That's unusual -- I'm glad your child is out.
I'm an slp who does EI in VA. Most daycares are either indifferent (I'm welcome there but they don't care what I'm doing) or open to sharing info and getting my help. Glad you posted the name to warn others! |

OP, Maybe it is time another person reviewed the daycare. |
| Wow! I'm stunned. I strongly encourage you to report them to the state licensing agency. Even if that behavior doesn't violate a regulation, it definitely violates the spirit and the inspectors need to know that. |

OP - wow. Now that you posted your diligence and the daycare's reaction it is astounding. Their behavior sounds really odd given your diligence in preparing them for the visit. Not to be cynical, but I suspect it means that they did not want prying eyes - perhaps they were under ratio that day in terms of teachers or some other violation was going on that they did not want the county to see. Such a hostile reaction is astounding. Glad you got out - sorry for the kids still there. that is not a good daycare.
Thanks for posting. If other parents have had to remove their children from daycares because of similar behaviors - PLEASE POST names and details of the incidents that causeed you to leave. |
| Hang in there!!! Our daycare was awesome with our therapists and in the end out therapists attributed our DD progress to the fact they continually followed through for her. Daycare can work for you and should be a case for your kid with special issues to flourish! |

OP - Look at this link. http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/144903.page
If you have the energy, perhaps you could report the action to DOJ - apparently they have successfully investigated many daycares for ADA violations of this sort. Failing to allow infants and toddlers to visit appears to be an explicit violation of ADA if you read DOJ's somewhat old guidelines. http://www.ada.gov/childq%26a.htm |

OP here. Thank you for this information. I wrote a letter to Will Campos, my district council member. I will give him until Wednesday morning to reply. If not, then I will call his office.
Please forgive me but I am new at this. After reading the act, I think my strongest point is: "Centers have to make reasonable modifications to their policies and practices to integrate children, parents, and guardians with disabilities into their programs unless doing so would constitute a fundamental alteration." Since the therapist wanted to conduct the services in my DD's natural environment, I think this point would apply. The afternoon caregiver's response of "why does this have to happen here." seems like a violation of the law too. Thank you all for this information. I really do appreciate it. |
| Whoa OP! That's unbelievable! What an ignorant bunch of people who seem to have no understanding of how therapy works. Don't they realize that they are NOT therapists. I would definitely report them and have the therapy program report them as well. |
| OP here. I reviewed the center on the yellow pages site. |
| OP where did you end up taking your child for daycare, if you don't mind my asking |
